I need some help installing VirtueMart on Joomla 1.1

I do nto want VirtueMart to take over my first page. I want the Joomla standard features and product pages are found via Content or clicking a link to "store"

The products are not the main goal of teh site it is an information site.

tuemart component on a new 2.5.4 installation of joomla however whenever i upload it comes up with errors. I have even tried unzipping and ftp'ing the files to /tmp and click install but that doesn't work. I have been playing around with it and the errors i seem to be getting are package not found and then there seems to be a memory error occasionally to do with libraries/joomla/utilities/buffer.php basically i just need to be able to somehow install virtuemart. hoping someone can help asap.
