Designing A Wide Area Network

I have a project to do called "monitoring and alerting a wide area network".I need something practically and i thought to do that with nagios.I configured nagios in ubuntu 11.04 but i don't know what to do to monitor a wan.If you know to work with nagios and you know what to do for my project contact me for more details.

I need a simple social network. The design runs on my own. My idea is to create a basic social network, wall, user profile, you can send private messages, upload photos, vote, and give comments.
Would have two types of users: free, and paying users (for this you must integrate a payment system).
