[Teach me] with a well-documented, C# roguelike.
Required skills: C# Programming, Game Design
I require a roguelike written in Visual C# (possibly utilising libtcod, at your discretion). The finished project will serve as a foundation for my own continued experimentation. The primary purpose of the task, though, is for me to learn by example, your example! I'm somewhere between a beginner and intermediate in terms of knowledge and the skill to put it into practice. You could consider my skills similar to a first, or possibly, second-year computer science student with a number of gaps in knowledge.
I need 20 hours of code work per week for an initial period of two weeks. Additionally, for every 5 hours of work I require a video diary recorded, as described below, which will be between 30 minutes and 2 hours in length. Essentially, this is 22 to 28 hours of work per week. Work is delivered in 5 hour (coding hours) blocks complete with corresponding video diary. Four blocks (4 x 5 coding hours and video diary) need to be delivered by the end of each week however I'd prefer them to be staggered across each week rather than received all on the last day. Payment will be on a weekly basis via either bank transfer or preferably, paypal.
Note: there is a trial period of one block (as defined above). This block also requires an hourly log be kept of work done. The log is merely a brief explanation of each hour's coding. It is unpaid and the time uncounted.
Due to illness, I haven't been able to get the most out of conventional education. I need a mentor! I'm looking for someone capable with the code and with an effective, enthusiastic approach to teaching. Code will need to be thoroughly but succinctly commented, keeping in mind an explanatory perspective. I also require the aforementioned video diary. For each video you will screen-cap your code and provide a voice-over tour of your recent block of work, explaining what you've done, why and how. If there are any concepts that may need explanation in their own right, you'll cover them, too, hence the variable length of the video diaries. The diary will serve as a more engaging form of documentation on top of the commentary in the code. A clear and friendly speaking voice is a plus!
If you're stuck for software to create this screen-capped diary, I believe Camtasia is highly rated.
The concepts I'd like to particularly learn include procedural generation, artificial intelligence and data structures. I also need to know more about efficiency of algorithms and general game development, i.e. how one (or a team) goes about planning, coordinating and developing a project. These items are not comprehensive, there's numerous other relevant topics I'm sure I need covered - please suggest and / or improvise (you are the teacher, after all).
My interests at large with regard to computer science and game programming include extensive use of procedural generation, clever and surprising A.I., 'living' or organic virtual worlds, meaningful play or interaction and high quality game design. I also appreciate a keen sense of aesthetic.
Relevant games I enjoy and draw inspiration from include Dwarf Fortress, Liberal Crime Squad, Rogue Survivor, Prospector and X-COM 1, among others.
