I own a small 4 person low-voltage contracting firm in Los Angeles. We design, sell and install high-end commercial and residential audio/video systems. We also do security camera systems, automation and control systems, networks, telephone systems, lighting, consulting, and a dozen or more other related things.
I've been operating the company under my name, but it's 5 words (13 syllables) long and not very memorable.
I've finally come up with a company name I like. It's a single four-letter word.
Most of my competitors use some combination of two or three words from a short list of jargony/tech terms like: integrated, systems, technology, automated, integrators, house, control, sound, audio, video, advanced, installations, etc. for example: Integrated Systems Technology, or Advanced System Integrators, or Tech House Consulting. Zzzzzzzzzzz.
We're very serious about what we do, but we also realize we're not curing diseases or fomenting world peace. There are hundreds of companies in LA who do what we do, we're one of the oldest and I'd like to think one of the best but that's subjective. The bottom line is: a modicum of professionalism and technical proficiency is all you really need to get by in this field. What really distinguishes one firm from another is knowing how to get your client to like you and, by extension, want to refer you.
So, I believe, one's corporate identity needs to strike a balance between the sometimes contradictory: tech but approachable, clever but simple, creative but disciplined, orderly but fun.
I have already designed the logo in my head, three very simple geometric shapes. I'd like to see the logo mimick an iPhone app button in shape and texture. And I like orange.
I need someone to take my mental thumbnail sketch and run with it, perfect it, and bring it to life so it brings into harmony the contradictions mentioned above. Along with that, I'll need you to develope a style sheet for documents (memos, letters, proposals and invoices), a business card, buck slip, and a digital signature for emails. Eventually, we'll but the logo on shirts and vehicles. There's a website redesign in the future as well, but first things first.
