Need local app-basic GUI to connect to remote mysql database

Hello friends,
I need a basic windows executable app (actually, it would be even better if it were usable in Linux too, but Windows only is fine).
The interface is just going to have a login and password to connect to a remote MySQL database. There will be a checkbox to save the login credentials for future use.
Once connected, it will fetch all the data from the MySQL database. Don't worry about the exact details... I can write the query for this... I mostly just need you to get it connected to the mysql server. OPTIONAL #1: To edit the content that is being displayed and a button to update the server. OPTION #2: To print off the displayed data.
IMPORTANT: I need the source files so that I can edit everything. So you MUST let me know which language / interface / tools you plan on using. Currently, I'm messing around with Visual Studio 2010, but I'm open to anything right now. Note: I run both Linux and Windows, and I'm diving into GUI-based application development.
SIDE INFORMATION:
My general AREAS OF INTEREST: appointment calendar, remote database connectivity, interface for COM port control (electronics / robotics), and credit card submission interface for PayPal Virtual Terminal. So whatever development environment you choose to work with... let me know. I am pretty new to working with compiled application development, so I'm going to study and research the language(s)/IDEs/dbs/etc. that you recommend. (Got suggestions any suggestions for which technologies would be ideal for those listed items of interest?)
Additionally, I would like to have flexibility to be able to easily edit the source code for these projects and recompile the apps as needed. I'd prefer not to have a crap ton of file dependencies or to have various running services in the background (WAMP/LAMP/etc.). The more portable / cross-platform friendly the application the better. Windows-based GUI is the primary focus, but Linux compatibility is nice too.
I may choose multiple bidders just for providing information... you don't have to do the project(s) to win... I am paying for good, constructive information. ;)

2) If the above is possible, all i would like is a simple program written in MS Visual C# Express to connect to an Outlook calendar.

Remote Mysql database adjustment
1. create remote mysql database on custom coded script
2. script to be installed on one server and updating mysql database on another server

Need to connect via dial-up and broadband at same time
connection. We can do all that now except when we establish the dialup connection it takes over all applications including gotomypc. We would prefer to do this on an XP machine but if we absolutely have to we can go with windows 7. I haven't been able to find too much about doing this by searching online but I think it would not be all that complicated.

RMS already installed on Server need to connect Dolphin
Ray Media Server was already installed on the server and working, need to connect the Dolphin client to Server RMS.
RMS was installed on domain location /home/****/opt/ray_server/ on the dedicated server domain.
The client account is on the same server but on another domain. That client need to connect to RMS from his domain.

The server don't have ODBC driver installed.

GPS coordinates from Linux box to mySQL database
un as a service and report the coordinates from this GPS to a mySQL database. I am using Debian 6 on my Linux box.
This install should not need a GUI to run. It should run as a service. The service should probe the GPS every 5 seconds and update to the database with its coordinates.
This project can turn into a long-term partnership as I will need future assistance with further developing this project.
