Arduino Dmx Transmitter with Sensor

I'm working on an art project which requires lights on a moving vehicle to respond to its motion. I'm a good programmer with no Arduino experience. I'd like someone to:
-- Help me get going on Arduino
-- Choose a sensor (rotary encoder? accelerometer? visual system?)
-- Set up the board with the sensor and a DMX output
-- Write a sample C/C++ Arduino program that I can modify
-- Test that the program, sensor, and DMX output works, and
-- Answer any questions I have while I program the sequences

Arduino Programmer
a 16x16 matrix display using the 74hc595 and I want to control this matrix display using DMX,

Assembly Data Logging

Using usb jump drive type of storage, when you connect jump drive to port automatic download to the jump drive of all data.
Name the file being downloaded with serial number of unit and date/time
Erase data once transferred
Display message on LCD of downloading progress and unit's serial number.
Display download complete.
Data can not be erased by the microcontroller on the flash drive. All data on flash drive must be preserved
