Database driven website
Required skills: Active Directory, MySQL
I intend to create a portuguese website about healthy places in Portugal. The main target of the site is to allow anyone to find in just a few seconds all the healthy places available nearby.
I would like to have a simple database driven website, similar to www.jimolenbush.com, for instance.
Actually, I would like to have it much simpler. The central and most important feature of the website should be the “Quick Search Box” (similar to the one of the site mentioned above) that should be connected to the database with the healthy places. Apart from this I want very little or no “noise”. Only the logo of the site and some simple links (about us, contact us, …) and nothing more. Much like Google’s simplicity.
The database I have for this is very simple. I don’t have knowledge in Access so this is in Excel format and have currenly about 400 entries. I expect it will grow easily up to 2.000 – 3.000 entries. Basically it includes the name of the healthy place, category, address, phone, e-mail, website, and some notes. So far it doesn’t have photos but I expect to have some in the future.
It’s also very important that the visitors have the possibility to contribute for this website by introducing new entries for the database (moderated by me and easily managed – ideal would be to make them fill a form and be accepted by me through a click of a button). Also, it’s a must to have the possibility that visitors would make comments and rate the existing entries in the directory (like Amazon.com book reviews).
The results page should be similar to the website given as an example above (www.jimolenbush.com) or Amazon.com results page. The visitor should have the possibility to introduce a comment and rate any of the entries of the results page. The rated entries should show the average rating. Entries in results page should be able to be sorted by alphabetic order, highest rating or publication date.
Most probably this site will be hosted at BlueHost. As far as I could understand, they support only MySQL databases.
I have no experience with websites, databases nor knowledge with WebSite tools like Dreamweaver or FrontPage so the website system you’ll create should be easy to update with new data (both the website and the database) by a no-techie.
