Javascript to Count Words and Provide Feedback

I need a page with Javascript that counts the number of words (not characters) in a text area or text field on the page (needs to work with both) as text is being entered and does the following with CSS:
1) changes the background color of the area/field
IF count < 5 then
Background = none
ELSE IF count < 50 then
Background = green
ELSE IF count < 100 then
Background = yellow
ELSE
Background = red
2) changes a text string printed on the page elsewhere
IF count < 5 then
Text = "Enter your message."
ELSE IF count < 50 then
Text = "This is probably brief enough."
ELSE IF count < 100 then
Text = "This may be too long."
ELSE
Text = "This is probably too long."
3) moves a graphic along a horizontal plane based on a few variables
length = 300
maxcount = 20
increment = length/maxcount
IF count > maxcount
horizontal position = length
ELSE
horizontal position = count * increment [rounded to whole of course]
Most of the scripting should be in an external js file. The CSS should be in an external css file. It needs to be cleanly coded and well commented. It needs to be a custom script, not a canned script that happens to include this functionality.
