My domain got hijacked...ish

I few months ago, I asked a free lancer to make me a website, he asked for the domain I wanted and I gave it to him, a few hours later it was registerd and then I lost contact with the webiste maker.
Is there anyone that can do anything to reregister the domain under my name? its not a major name, its just my surname and its a .net
Please please please help me out, or point me in the right direction. I'm going mad for the past few months pulling my hair out over this. I will probbally wait for it to drop, but that is intill next year, and he will probbally reregister it.
